Announcing the First National Standard for Glass Lining

March 17, 2017 - Glass lining has been providing unsurpassed benefits and longevity to otherwise problematic process piping systems in wastewater and sewage treatment plants for nearly 60 years. To assure that continued performance and longevity, it is extremely important that certain quality criteria be maintained. Recently, the first ever National Standard, ASTM B 1000-15, was established for glass lining which, if made a part of project specifications, will assure these ongoing performance benefits.

Some of the more important items contained in this new Standard include, but are not limited to the specific spark test limitations, and the requirement that all pipe maintain a certain level of straightness to assure proper joint function after product is assembled.

The U.S. Pipe Fabrication SG-14™ Glass Lining product has set the industry standard for nearly 50 years. Originally manufactured by Ervite Corporation, then later transferred to Vitco Corporation, then to U.S. Pipe, the product is second to none for quality, history and performance. Over the years, most other manufacturers have adopted the familiar green color of the SG-14™ to gain acceptance, but they have not necessarily maintained the same high quality standards. Some make NO REFERENCE to straightness of pipe, and give NO specifics to acceptable spark test limits.

As a result, and to differentiate our product going forward, the U.S. Pipe Fabrication SG-14™ product will be transitioning to a blue color beginning this spring. Doing so will assure to the end user that if the glass lining being delivered is blue in color, and bares the U.S. Pipe Fabrication logo, it is a product that is 100% compliant with the newly established ASTM Standard for quality. Color in no way affects the performance of the glass lining. The glass lining would be basically colorless without addition of the coloring oxides that make any visual inspection easier.

All U.S. Pipe Fabrication product is fully tested, documents are supplied, and, per the Standard, we will agree to negotiate for on-site test verification to further assure full compliance with the Standard.

To assure continued success and performance of this time tested, beneficial product, we highly recommend the inclusion of this new ASTM Standard in all future project specifications, and that all submittals be carefully reviewed for complete compliance.
